People who say gamers don’t read are talking nonsense.
They don’t understand gamers at all.
I know plenty of gamers who don’t read books in the traditional sense, but that doesn’t mean they don’t love deep stories, rich worlds, progression systems, and unforgettable characters. In fact, some of the best stories I’ve ever experienced are not in games, films, TV shows, or music. They’re in books.
And most gamers are missing out on them completely.
Not because they don’t care.
Not because they’re lazy.
But because reading feels like something they “don’t have time for”.
I used to think exactly the same way.

Why Gamers Think They Don’t Read (And Why That’s Fair)
If you’re a gamer, the word reading probably triggers one of two thoughts:
- “I don’t have time for that.”
- “I can’t sit still and focus on a book anymore.”
And honestly, that makes sense.
We live in a world stacked with entertainment. Games, YouTube, films, TV series, social media, second screens. Sitting down quietly with a physical book feels unnatural for a lot of people now. It did for me too.
When I was younger, reading was my escape.
Now, if I get free time, I’m gaming, watching something, training, or doing life stuff. I’m rarely just sitting there opening a book.
That’s exactly why audiobooks are so powerful for gamers.
Why Audiobooks Are Perfect for a Gamer Lifestyle
Audiobooks don’t compete with gaming.
They don’t compete with walking the dog.
They don’t compete with driving.
They don’t compete with chores, gym sessions, or downtime.
They sit alongside everything you already do.
Any time your hands are busy but your mind is free, audiobooks fit perfectly. Walking, grinding in games, driving, cleaning, even relaxing between matches.
That’s why I now listen to one to two audiobooks every single week.
“But I’ll Miss Stuff…”
This is the biggest objection I hear from gamers.
“I’d listen to audiobooks, but I’d miss loads of details.”
Two important things:
- Good audiobooks are written with this in mind.
Authors naturally repeat and reinforce key ideas. Missing a small detail rarely matters. - Great stories get better on repeat listens.
If a book is good enough, you’ll want to listen again and catch the extra details anyway.
I very rarely miss anything important. And if I do, it’s never a problem.
Audiobooks don’t demand perfection. They fit real life.
No Sponsorship, No Affiliate Links
Quick note before the recommendations:
This isn’t sponsored.
There are no affiliate links.
I’m not trying to sell you anything.
I’m sharing this because I genuinely believe audiobooks are one of the most underrated upgrades a gamer can make.
If you love progression, systems, strategy, worlds, and character growth, this is for you.
My Top Audiobook Recommendations for Gamers
1. Shattered Dreams: Ultimate Level One
By Sean Wilson
This is one of the easiest entry points for gamers.
The world is fully gamified. At 18, everyone receives a skill. Some are powerful, some are mundane, some are useless. Skills can be leveled. Dungeons exist. There’s a tower that almost no one ever defeats.
The hook?
The main character receives a skill that cannot be leveled in a world where progression is everything.
What follows is pure gamer brain. Min-maxing. Exploiting loopholes. Adapting the system. Watching someone succeed despite a “bricked” build is insanely satisfying.
There are currently nine books, and they’re perfect for long listening sessions.
2. 1% Lifesteal
By Robert Blaise
This one leans closer to modern life with a sci-fi fantasy twist.
Monsters appear. Skills exist. The main character has had a brutally hard life, and when chaos hits, he ends up with what looks like a terrible combat skill: 1% lifesteal.
That sounds useless.
It isn’t.
This series is about turning a weak build into something terrifying through intelligence, grit, and system mastery. The books are long, detailed, and deeply satisfying if you enjoy complex mechanics and slow power growth.
3. Oh Great! I Was Reincarnated as a Farmer
By Benjamin Kerei
This one is hilarious without being a comedy.
A professional gamer dies, wakes up in a fantasy world, and receives… a farmer skill.
No combat leveling.
No dungeon grinding.
No efficient XP farming.
Watching a gamer trapped in a system that forces inefficiency is endlessly entertaining. The writing is clever, self-aware, and genuinely fun while still delivering real progression.
Long audiobooks, ongoing series, and a perfect mix of humour and seriousness.
4. The Underworld Collection
By Apollos Thorne
This was one of my first LitRPG experiences and still one of my favourites.
A group of young people are kidnapped and thrown into an underworld dungeon by a lich. Each receives a skill. Strength. Necromancy. Power.
The main character receives fae magic, a healing-focused ability.
Watching him turn a support-style skill into something deadly is incredibly satisfying. The system is clear, the progression is rewarding, and the books are bundled into long collections, making them great value for listening.
5. The Painted Man / The Warded Man
By Peter V. Brett
This is my favourite series of all time.
It’s not gamified. It’s pure fantasy.
At night, demons appear and slaughter humans. Humans survive only by hiding behind magical wards painted on homes and villages. Demons can’t be killed. Wounds heal instantly. Survival is everything.
The story follows multiple characters across cultures, regions, and philosophies. Western societies hide. Eastern societies train and fight despite the odds.
The world-building is incredible. The cultures feel real. The characters grow from childhood into adulthood, shaped by fear, survival, and belief.
If you love deep lore and brutal worlds, this series is unmatched.
Honorable Mention: Lair for Rent
A hilarious twist on AI, money, and power.
An AI programmed to care only about profit finds itself in a world of heroes and villains. All it wants is money. It will manipulate anyone to get it.
Short, clever, and surprisingly addictive.
Why Gamers Should Give Audiobooks a Chance
If you’re a gamer who says:
- “I don’t read”
- “I don’t have time”
- “I can’t focus on books”
Audiobooks bypass all of that.
You don’t lose gaming time.
You don’t lose free time.
You gain worlds.
Audiobooks fit perfectly into modern gamer life.
If you already listen to audiobooks, let me know what you’re listening to right now.
If this convinced you to give them a try, I’d love to hear that too.
