Unlocking the Final Fantasy 14 Black Mage Job:

As your mentor in the way of all things Black Mage, the most important thing to share with you all to start would be where you pick the class up!

Black Mage starts as Thaumaturge, and can at first be found in Ul’Dah – Steps of Nald toward the bottom of the city, in their Thaumaturge’s Guild with the quest “So You Want to Be a Thaumaturge.”

Once you hit level 30 as a Thaumaturge, your Job Quest will unlock, letting you collect the Job Stone that grants you the memories of the Black Mage’s who came before, and allowing you to tap in to the destructive powers they wield.

The Final Fantasy 14 Black Mage Playstyle:

Staff in hand, knowledge bared and class unlocked, our Final Fantasy 14 Black Mage Beginner’s Guide will serve to teach you how to manipulate your connection to the powers of the elements and aether; we want to help you decide if this style of combat is for you, so let’s talk about it, and delve into it’s more complex mechanics.

First off: Black Mage is a Magical Caster DPS. This means, standing in place charging up attacks to dish out damage; It is also the highest damage per attack of the Casters we have now, but it sacrifices very long cast times to dish out these staggeringly big damage numbers. As such, this also puts a huge emphasis on positioning, adaptability, and fight knowledge; however, those who can do so are rewarded with explosions of burning flame, flurries of shattering ice and strikes thunderous strikes of lightning that can reduce foes to naught but a victim of your elemental prowess.

Black Mage is the perfect DPS for people who like the big numbers and who want to see the aether and elements bent to your will, at the cost of having lots of cast time, and limited mobility.

The Final Fantasy 14 Black Mage Job Mechanics:

In Final Fantasy 14 Black Mage uses the Elemental Gauge to display your balance toward an element, increasing its potency and MP cost, stacking up to three times through the use of Fire I, Fire II and Fire III, or Ice I, Ice II or Ice III. You can only be balanced to one of these at a time, for 30 seconds, refreshing every time you cast a spell.

When wanting to swap elements, you can use the Transpose skill, swapping you to having one stack of the opposite element. Alternatively, when all three stacks of an element have been built up, your next spell of the opposite element will cost nothing, but it will set you to having no stacks at all.

When the bottom right side of the Gauge is a bronze colour, you will be under the effect of “Enochian”, which will increase your magic damage overall. To reach this point, you will need to have any stack in the Gauge, making it important to cast either a Fire, or Ice spell before you start using others.

The last, and most famous skill for Black Mage, is Ley Lines. Ley Lines is a magical circle placed on the ground at your feet that reduces your cast times by a huge 15%, meaning positioning this well, and early, can provide huge damage bonuses as you dish out a flurry of fire and frost!

As you progress later into the class; you will gain more ways to nullify MP costs, swap into the opposite element under full stacks, and more ways to amplify your damage.

The Final Fantasy 14 Black Mage Endgame Potential:

Though the class is burdened by a weakness in movement, their damage output in all forms of content is astounding. Their bursts of flame and fire rend enemies asunder and showcase a higher damage-per-hit than any other Job in the game, with very small downtime in their damage rotation to recoup mana.

This makes Black Mage a formidable party member, and those who can learn the fight positions, play to their strengths, and do so with a smile will look out over their hats with a devious grin and see naught but the raid boss as ash.
